Now freed, the Duchess clutches onto Alice (the only person she knows around)and is quite nice to her until shooed away by the Queen of Hearts. Trying to strike up a conversation the Queen asks if Alice has met the Mock Turtle (she hasn't). After hearing this (SHOCKING!) answer she insists that the gryphon take Alice to see the mock turtle. On the way over Alice hears the King pardon everyone from having their heads chopped off. Upon arriving Alice discovers the turtle is sobbing even though the gryphon tells Alice he has no sorrow. The reason for his sadness seems to be from the fact that he is no longer a turtle (there is no description as to how it is that he is a MOCK turtle, one can only wonder). After getting over this he proceeds to tell Alice of his schooling, how he has had classes in uglification,distraction, mystery, etc. With prodding from the gryphon he begins to tell her about games.
